A Britisher by the name Muntro was the first planter who bought 227 acres of forest area from the Travancore Maha Raja in 1887 to star t the first ever tea producing company in Munnar. Tata - Kannandevan, Harissons Malayalam and Kulukkumala are the major tea producing companies owning the majority of the wide spread tea estates.
