The Venice os Asia is renowned for its coir industry. Rice and fish is the staple diet. For a total Alappuzha experience traverse the canals on small vallams (Boats) or anchor in the middle of the backwater lakes on a Kettuvallam (rice boat converted to cozy house boats) - spend the night under the star lit sky, listening to the splash of water on to the boat. If you are a fishing enthusiast, cast the net-wait for your big catch - sufficient for a spicy dinner of rice and fish. Kettuvallam ...

Long before the coming of the rail and the road, waterways were the best mode of transport. Kuttanadan rice was transported to nearby markets of Kottayam, Kollam and Cochin by long rice boats which just had a small hut for the boatman called Kettuvallams. Some if these Kettuvallams have now been converted into luxury single and double bedroom houseboats for cruises and overnight stay in the backwaters.
